"In a number of countries that have recently legalized same-sex marriage, the impetus for legal change came through the courts… Along with New Zealand and Australia, Taiwan is 1 of only 3 nations in the Asia-Pacific region that has legalized same-sex unions. In Africa, only South Africa allows gays and lesbians to wed, which became legal in 2006. In the Americas, 5 countries besides Ecuador and the U.S. – Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia and Uruguay – have legalized gay marriage."
