A new David Bowie-inspired Barbie has been released, retailing for $50 (£40).

The new doll is based on the late Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust character.

Bowie, who was bisexual, passed away on 10 January 2016 at the age of 69.

He’s known for hits like Heroes and also Just Dance. He has sold 140 records worldwide.

‘Barbie honours the ultimate pop chameleon’

In a statement, Barbie parent company Mattel said: ‘In a definitive celebration of two pop culture icons, Barbie honours the ultimate pop chameleon, English singer, songwriter and actor David Bowie, whose dramatic musical transformations continue to influence and inspire.

‘This collectible Barbie doll honours the cultural legacy of the musical genius who redefined rock and roll … Colours and decoration may vary.’

One Twitter user responded: ‘My knee-jerk reaction was negative. But on second thought A) it’s cool to see Barbie gender bending and B) I bet Bowie would have gotten a kick out of this.’

Bowie introduced the Ziggy character in 1971. It of course inspired his 1972 The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars album.

The Barbie release coincides with the 50-year anniversary of Bowie’s Space Oddity record.
