Queer actor Anthony Rapp and another man are suing Kevin Spacey for assaulting them in the 1980s when they were both minors.

Star Trek: Discovery star Rapp first made his allegations against Spacey in 2017. He claims the actor climbed on top of him and tried to have sex with him in 1986. At the time, Rapp was just 14 and Spacey was 26.

At the time Spacey said he did not remember the incident and blamed alcohol for any wrongdoing that had occurred. But, without admitting the offense, he also offered his ‘sincerest apology’ saying it ‘would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.’

The other accuser, who is remaining anonymous, says he and Spacey had intercourse and oral sex.

Rapp’s allegations became a breakthrough moment in highlighting male-on-male abuse as part of the #MeToo movement. Other men also came forward with accusations against Spacey.

Since then, another boy accused Spacey of assaulting him in Nantucket in 2016. He sued but then withdrew the lawsuit.

Moreover, Spacey faced criminal investigations and charges in both the US and UK. However, prosecutors also dropped these.

Lawsuit filed in New York

The men filed their civil lawsuit in New York State court in Manhattan yesterday (9 September).

It is a further blow for Spacey who has lost multiple awards and TV and film roles since the allegations first emerged. In particular, Netflix dropped him from his starring role in their Washington DC political drama, House of Cards.

Before the men came forward, Spacey was at the height of his powers.

The Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy winner was a star of TV and Hollywood blockbusters. He had also completed a successful stint as artistic director of the prestigious Old Vic theatre in London.

Meanwhile the accusations prompted Spacey to come out as gay.

At the time, he said:

‘This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fuelled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy.

As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.

‘I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.’

However other prominent LGBT+ celebrities slammed him for trying to use his announcement to detract from the serious allegations against him.

Spacey has not yet commented on the new lawsuit against him.
