Cyberbullying crusader Melania Trump has yet to speak out in the wake of President Donald Trump bullying the widow of the late Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), suggesting at his Wednesday night rally that the late congressman was “looking up” instead of down from heaven.
During his rally in Battle Creek, Mich., the president said that he gave the late John Dingell “A-plus treatment” during his memorial service.
“She calls me up: ‘It’s the nicest thing that’s ever happened,” Trump said, quoting a conversation he recalled with his widow, Debbie Dingell. “Thank you so much. John would be so thrilled. He’s looking down. He’d be so thrilled. Thank you so much, sir.’ I said, ‘That’s OK, don’t worry about it.’”
“Maybe he’s looking up, I don’t know,” Trump added.
“I don’t know. Maybe,” he continued. “But let’s assume he’s looking down.”
At the same rally, Trump invoked his 13-year-old son Barron Trump while attacking Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) with a racial slur.
While Melania remains silent on both attacks, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday condemned Trump’s attack, calling it “cruel” and “sad.”
When a reporter asked Pelosi at her weekly press conference about the attack on Dingell, the Speaker paused and closed her eyes for a few seconds before answering: “Let us pray. Let us pray for the president.”
“What the president misunderstands is that cruelty is not wit. Just because he gets a laugh for saying the cruel things that he says doesn’t mean he’s funny. It’s not funny at all. It’s very sad,” Pelosi said.
Michigan GOP Rep. Paul Mitchell also ripped into Trump for his “dishonorable” attack on Dingell.
“John Dingell was a well-respected man & I consider Debbie a close colleague and friend. To use his name in such a dishonorable manner at last night’s rally is unacceptable from anyone, let alone the President of the United States,” Mitchell tweeted. “An apology is due, Mr. President.”
Mitchell joined a growing list of Michigan lawmakers from both sides of the aisle calling on Trump to apologize.
