President Biden on Friday signed an executive order revoking two measures issued by former President Trump over the summer in response to protests against racial injustice that targeted monuments of controversial Americans.
Biden’s order revokes Trump’s executive order that established a “National Garden of American Heroes” that called for erecting statues of hundreds of prominent Americans. It also revoked another executive order that prioritized punishment for those caught vandalizing statues or monuments.
Both orders were signed by Trump during the summer of 2020 as protests took place around the country in response to the murder of George Floyd by a police officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.
Homophobic preacher Billy Graham, one of the most famous Christian evangelists in history, along with former President Ronald Reagan, were to be honored at Trump’s sculpture garden.
In 1974, Graham described homosexuality as an “ungodly spirit of self-gratification” while advising a young queer woman. “We traffic in homosexuality at the peril of our spiritual welfare,” he said. He died in 2018 at the age of 99.
