Brazilian Judge Orders Netflix to Remove “Gay Jesus” Christmas Special

A Brazilian judge has ordered Netflix to stop streaming The First Temptation of Christ, a comedy film portraying Jesus as possibly gay.

Rio de Janeiro judge Benedicto Abicair issued the ruling on Wednesday in response to a petition by a Brazilian Catholic organization arguing the “honor of millions of Catholics” was at stake. The decision reversed an earlier ruling not to censor the film, and will remain valid unless a higher court invalidates it, the Associated Press reports.

Neither Netflix nor the comedy troupe responsible for the Christmas special, Porta dos Fundos, responded to requests for comment. The troupe’s headquarters were targeted in a petrol bomb attack on Christmas Eve over the film, which thankfully didn’t result in any deaths or injuries.

The judge claimed the removal of the special would benefit “Brazilian society which is mostly Christian.”

The film shows Jesus returning home for his 30th birthday, with a new friend by his side whom it is heavily implied is gay.

“Porta dos Fundos values artistic freedom and humor through satire on the most diverse cultural themes of our society and believes that freedom of expression is an essential construction for a democratic country,” the group said in a statement immediately following the bombing.

Brazil’s new president, Jair Bolsonaro, who has bragged of being homophobic, pulled funding for movies with LGBTQ themes and characters last year.

In May, the country’s Supreme Court issued a ruling making homophobia and transphobia illegal.
