Broadway Heartthrob Gavin Creel Puts Gay Spin on “The King and I”

Something wonderful indeed!

Tony winner Gavin Creel has reimagined “Something Wonderful” from the Tony-winning 1951 musical The King and I as part of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization’s “R&H Goes Pop!” YouTube series.

In The King and I, which was adapted into a hit 1956 film, “Something Wonderful” is sung about the King of Siam by his head wife, Lady Thiang, to visiting British teacher Anna. As a man taking on the classic, Creel, 43, turns it into a gay love song for the modern era.

“Rodgers & Hammerstein are the grandfathers of our art form,” says the out Broadway actor in a statement. “To me, there is no greater melody in musical theater than ‘Something Wonderful.’ It is tension and release, beauty and tumult, and unabashed romance. That romance is timeless.”

“I wanted to sing through me,” Creel told NY1’s On Stage. “I wanted to sing from the point of a man, a gay man singing. We didn’t change any of the words.”

“R&H Goes Pop,” hosted by Broadway star Laura Osnes, launched last year. Broadway heartthrobs Jelani Alladin and Matt Doyle memorably put their gay twist on The King and I’s “We Kiss in a Shadow.”

Creel won a 2017 Tony for his performance as Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly! His other Broadway credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie, La Cage aux Folles, Hair, The Book of Mormon, She Loves Me, and Waitress.
