Caitlyn Jenner jumps the shark in announcing bid for governor

“I’m in!” With those two words, world famous Olympian, reality television star and out transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner launched a bid to unseat California’s embattled Gov. Gavin Newsom, who faces an almost certain recall election this fall.

“Get out!” was the collective response on social media with very few exceptions.

Not since Tom Brady longingly hoped for a high-five from his teammates in 2013 has any athlete so famous received so little support. In fact, the transgender celebrity is getting just the opposite of support since making her announcement on Twitter Friday: She’s being slammed on social media for having “no experience” and being a “grifter” looking for a new “money-making gig.”

And as Outsports reported, Jenner’s campaign is a complete 180 from where she was in April 2020, telling me on the Outsports podcast, The Trans Sporter Room, she had no interest in politics. There is a lot of speculation as to who or what changed her mind. We know from people who watch TV’s “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” that Jenner recently sought her ex-wife Kris Jenner’s advice to be relevant again, and make some money doing it. Awkward! But let’s think about that: Could it be that the famous momager suggested a run for office? Would that be an actual strategy, or maybe a plot to sabotage her former spouse as revenge for writing her very painful tell-all memoir?

To tell you the truth: I don’t give a fuck. Yes, I’ve met Caitlyn Jenner a number of times, and although she’s been considerate to me personally, I’m not blind to the fact she is a master media manipulator. Her kindness to me does not erase the fact that she is an out-of-touch, wealthy, conservative, narcissist opportunist who, for all the good we’re told she does with her fortune to benefit the transgender community, she doesn’t really care about anyone other than herself or her family. Even some of her “friends” from her reality show, “I Am Cait,” are saying, “I Am Done.”

What I wouldn’t give for a rolled up newspaper to swat her with right now.

You want more? She lives in a Malibu dreamhouse above the clouds (okay, so, it’s the marine layer, whatever) and she couldn’t squeeze even one word into her campaign message about the epidemic of homelessness? She’s as out of touch about that problem as she is anti-trans legislation. Caitlyn Jenner is the world’s most famous trans athlete and she, what, forgot to include even one word about the fight to ban them in two dozen states?

Here’s another one: how about preparing for California’s next natural disaster? Or any words that hint at where she stands, on anything. It’s embarrassing, and no wonder she’s being dragged.

What’s not really surprising, however, is that Jenner’s first bid for public office is controversial; it’s not just because she’d be the first trans governor in the country, California’s first woman governor and the first Olympian governor. It’s how she’s positioned herself that has tongues wagging.

“As Californians, we face a now-or-never opportunity to fundamentally fix our state before it’s too late,” the 71-year-old Jenner, a Republican, wrote. “Taking on entrenched Sacramento politicians and the special interests that fund them requires a fighter who isn’t afraid to do what is right. I am a proven winner,” she said.

Wait. “Proven winner”? Does she realize the Montreal Summer Games were 45 years ago?

Okay, fine, Cait, finish your thought. We’ll wait.

“And the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom’s disastrous time as governor.”

Speaking of disasters, Jenner is being ratioed on Twitter in much the same way the Hindenburg left its mark on the hydrogen-filled dirigible business in the late 1930s.

I’m very sure Jenner does not give a shit about what I’ve written or anything anyone is saying, just as before. The truth is that Jenner has gone off the deep end this time. At this most critical time in the struggle for transgender rights, the last thing California or the country needs is a trans ambassador who promises to be the sequel to the Donald Trump celebrity political horror show we only barely survived. No. No. A thousand times, no.
