The students at St. Edward Catholic School in Nashville can no longer check out Harry Potter books from their school’s library.
School officials warned that reading the curses and spells contained in the fantasy series by J.K Rowling can “risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text.”
The seven-book series chronicles the life of young wizard, Harry Potter and his friends at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
In an email to parents, Rev. Dan Reehill, the pastor of the church associated with the school said, “These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception.”
“The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text,” he added in the email.
Reehill also told parents that he consulted with several exorcists in the U.S. and Rome who recommended removing the books.
Rebecca Hammel, the superintendent of schools for the Catholic Diocese of Nashville, confirmed Reehil sent an email about removing the books following an inquiry from a parent.
