Celine Dion Is Finding the “Courage” to Go On, With 3 New Songs and a World Tour

It’s been quite the journey for Céline Dion—diva, fashion icon, world-class chest-thumper.

Since losing her longtime husband and manager, René Angélil, in 2016, she’s kept a brave, and busy, public face: continuing her record-breaking Vegas residency, launching a gender-neutral children’s clothing line, becoming an honorary black lady at an Aretha Franklin tribute, hopping on the Deadpool 2 soundtrack, and generally slaying any red carpet on which she deigns to walk.

But under all that astounding breath control beats a heart that has been breaking. On her first English-language album in six years, Courage, Dion comes to grips with her pain, enlisting the help of Sia, David Guetta, and other contemporary hitmakers.

Being the benevolent being of light and octave-runs that she is, Dion has given us a preview of Courage with three new tracks:

“Lying Down,” co-written by David Guetta, Giorgio Tuinfort, and Sia:

“Imperfections,” co-written by LAUV and produced by Dallas K:

And the tile track, “Courage,” co-written by The New Royales:

These join lead single “Flying on My Own,” though unlike that explosion of dance-floor glitter, these three cuts capitalize on Dion’s knack for bombastic balladry.

Thematically, however, all the songs are similar in that they’re about her picking herself up and allowing her heart, as it were, to go on. Though she’s not ready to date, Dion admits that she misses being touched. “I miss to be hugged,” she said in a recent interview with Today. “I missed to be told, ‘You’re beautiful.’ I miss what a boyfriend and I miss what a husband would do.”

Céline, you’re beautiful.

But don’t cry for her, Argentina, because Dion is going to be just fine. She’s got a loving team of people around her, including this hot gay, and a new world tour, which kicks off tonight in Québec and will take her well into the new year.

“I have to spread my wings,” Dion told Today. “I have to prove to myself, to my children, to my team, to my fans that I’m fine. And I’m strong. And I feel great.”
