Comic con superheroes fly their rainbow flags

LGBT+ fans have long flocked to comic cons around the world, but one has taken queer representation to a whole new level.

Reddit user Illyriana posted this photo from Ace Universe comic con. It shows some of the world’s biggest names in superhero movies with LGBT+ flags.

Brie Larson, who plays Captain Marvel is shown with the LGBT+ or gay Pride Flag. And Tessa Thompson, who has starred in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame is pictured with the bisexual flag.

Meanwhile Chris Hemsworth who plays Thor since 2011 poses with a Lesbian Pride Flag.

And finally Spider-Man Tom Holland does whatever a spider can with the trans flag.

Or as Illyriana puts it:

‘I present to you from left to right: Brie Larson aka Guardian of Gays, Tessa Thompson aka Champion of Bisexuals, Chris Hemsworth aka Protector of Lesbians, and last but not least, Tom Holland aka Defender of Trans Folx.

‘They are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. They are The Allyvengers.’

But what about LGBT+ representation in superhero movies?

Comic fans embraced the photos – although some wished the person who took them had called Iron Man to iron the flags first.

But it also raises the question of how much representation superhero films give LGBT+ characters and storylines.

That’s something Brie Larson herself raised in an interview with Variety last year. She broke fresh ground by starring as Captain Marvel in the first major stand-alone film for a female superhero.

Larson said: ‘I don’t understand how you could think that a certain type of person isn’t allowed to be a superhero. So to me it’s like, we gotta move faster. But I’m always wanting to move faster with this stuff.’

Meanwhile the Deadpool franchise is groundbreaking for making the main character pansexual. But even in those films, Deadpool’s on-screen romances are heterosexual.

So LGBT+ fans just have to keep pressuring DC, Marvel and other comic gods for visibility.

As one person commenting on these pictures put it: ‘The actors are cool but their bosses sure ain’t.’
