Canadian Conservative leadership candidate Derek Sloan MP claims banning dangerous ‘conversion therapy’ will legalize ‘child abuse’.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party is currently trying to ban anti-LGBT+ ‘conversion therapy’ by passing Bill C-8.
But Sloan claims this is ‘effectively putting into law child abuse’.
Instead, he said he would ban gender-confirmation surgery for under 18s. He referred to the surgery by the outdated phrase ‘sex change operations’.
Moreover, he indicated he would back conversion therapy which he referred to as ‘counselling’.
Sloan said: ‘The Liberals have said “no, you can’t get counselling and if a parent, as a parent you take your kid to get counselling for this, you can go to jail for five years”.
‘That’s insane, that’s ridiculous.
‘But on the other hand you’re allowed to put your kid on these you know, invasive medical regimes, you’re allowed to you know, give them these puberty blockers, you’re allowed to literally cut off their healthy you know, breasts and other sex organs.
‘That is child abuse. And I accuse Justin Trudeau and his government right now, of child abuse, that’s what they’re putting into law.’
Banning dangerous so-called ‘therapy’
In fact, leading medical, psychiatric and psychological bodies around the world have all condemned ‘conversion therapy’ as both futile and dangerous.
Canada is one of a number of countries exploring banning conversion therapy. Indeed, experts predict 2020 could be a breakthrough year on banning the cruel anti-LGBT ‘cures’.
Germany passed its ban in May becoming the fifth country to do so.
Meanwhile the UK is also looking at a ban, although it is not clear if it will have the force of law or cover trans people.
Canada’s Bill C-8 defines ‘conversion therapy’ as a ‘practice, treatment or service designed to change a person’s sexual orientation to heterosexual or gender identity to cisgender, or to repress or reduce non-heterosexual attraction or sexual behaviour’.
The punishment for forcing someone into conversion therapy will be up to five years jail.
‘Reprehensible’ comments
Sloan is one of four candidates who could replace Andrew Scheer as the next leader of the Conservative Party and of Canada’s official opposition.
The 35-year-old is a Member of Parliament representing Hastings – Lennox and Addington in Canada’s House of Commons. He is also the first Seventh-day Adventist ever to sit in the Commons.
Notably, it’s not the first time he has attacked the LGBT+ community during his leadership campaign.
In January, he got caught up in a row about whether being gay is a ‘choice’. Sloan believes the ‘cause of sexual orientation’ is ‘scientifically unclear’.
Moreover, he has said he would allow Conservative MPs to try to over-turn Canada’s same-sex marriage law. He would also let them reopen a debate on abortion.
Sloan also opposes legislation to protect people from discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
But his past comments have attracted criticism from fellow Conservatives and even his former election campaign manager, Eric Lorenzen.
Likewise, fellow Conservative leadership candidate Peter MacKay branded Sloan’s new remarks as ‘reprehensible’.
MacKay tweeted: ‘Forcing a child into “conversion therapy” is child abuse and it absolutely must be banned.’
Meanwhile Trudeau’s communications director Cameron Ahmad said the prime minister’s office wouldn’t dignify the comments with a reply.
But he told CTV: ‘Conversion therapy is a discredited, degrading, deeply harmful practice that has damaged countless lives and has absolutely no place in Canadian society.
‘Banning it is an important part of our work to advance true equality and protect all Canadians.’
