White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway on Monday linked President Trump’s impeachment to the injustice Martin Luther King Jr. faced when asked by a reporter what the president was doing to observe MLK Day.
“What is President Trump doing to observe King Day,” asked an MSNBC White House correspondent.
“Martin Luther King Day today?” Kellyanne asked.
“Well, I can tell you that the president is, uh, preparing for Davos, and agrees with many of the things that Dr. Martin Luther King stood for and agreed with for many years, including unity and equality and he’s not the one trying to tear the country apart through an impeachment process and a lack of substance that really is very shameful at this point. I’ve held my opinion on it for a very long time, but when you see the articles of impeachment that came out, I don’t think it was within Dr. King’s vision to have Americans drag through a process where the president is not going to be removed from office, is not being charged with bribery, extortion, high crimes or misdemeanors,” she continued.
“And I think that anybody who cares about ‘and justice for all,’ on today or any day of the year, will appreciate the fact that the president now will have a full-throttle defense on the facts and everybody should have that,” she added.

In response to Conway’s claim that Trump has fought to bring the country together unlike the Democrats, NAACP’s Sherrilyn Ifill told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell: “What an embarrassingly incompetent answer.”
“There is no answer that she can give that would be acceptable because he’s doing nothing to commemorate MLK day and frankly it would be hypocritical if he’d try to do that,” Ifill said. “Just in the last week, the tweets that he’s put up knowing that this rally was coming today. Knowing that the governor of Virginia had declared a state of emergency because of concerns and fears of credible threats of violence given what happened in 2017 in Charlottesville.”
“We’ve now reset what the president is supposed to do,” she added. “He’s not supposed to call for calm and peace. He’s not supposed to call us to our higher selves. He’s not supposed to demonstrate leadership. He just gets to tweet whatever he wants that he thinks will put him in a better political position. So no, he’s not doing anything to commemorate MLK Day and that’s why it’s most important that we do that work. We don’t need Mr. Trump to lead us in knowing what to do around equality and justice. We have a blueprint. We have leaders who have given their lives for this work and that’s what we should be focused on today.”
