Cyndi Lauper’s New Single Offers “Hope” for the Holidays

Cyndi Lauper has released “Hope,” her first new single since 2016, on all digital retailers and streaming platforms. 

“I’m so excited to finally release ’Hope’ as a single,” Lauper says in a statement. “The song doesn’t really have too many words. I wanted everyone to get the message through the feeling of it. With all the craziness going on in the world, we might not agree on much, but I think we can all agree that the world could use a little hope right now. I hope that people get that from the song.”

The song was inspired by the pop icon’s battle with psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory condition, and other psoriasis sufferers that she has met. Lauper finally found relief with Cosentyx, for which she is now a spokesperson, and partnered with pharmaceutical company Novartis to release a video for the anthem in 2017.

“I swore I wouldn’t write a song called ’Hope,’” she told CBS Philly last year. “As soon as I started writing, that’s what came out. And I thought to myself, Well, you lughead, just do it. People need hope. Everybody needs hope.”
 

It was announced last week that Lauper will receive the inaugural High Note Global Prize, presented by United Nations Human Rights and the High Note Global Initiative, in recognition of her tireless efforts as an LGBTQ advocate. The Grammy, Emmy, and Tony winner, who headlined the WorldPride opening ceremonies in New York, is being specifically honored for her work with True Colors United, which helps homeless LGBTQ youth.

Fellow LGBTQ ally Kesha will present the award to Lauper December 10, which is UN Human Rights Day, at Lauper’s annual “Home for the Holidays” benefit concert in Los Angeles. All of the net proceeds from the concert event will support True Colors United’s programs to prevent and end homelessness among LGBTQ youth.
