Four Democratic presidential candidates have tweeted this week about the epidemic of violence against Black transgender women.
Former Vice President Joe Biden and three U.S. senators — Kamala Harris of California, Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts — tweeted in the wake of the death of Denali Berries Stuckey, who was fatally shot in South Carolina last weekend. This was the 12th known homicide of a trans person in the U.S. this year, and all the victims have been Black women.
The Human Rights Campaign shared the candidates’ tweets and thanked them for bringing attention to the ongoing crisis.
Other Democratic hopefuls have previously spoken out about the issue. Notably, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey mentioned the need to address anti-trans violence during the first round of debates and later wrote a commentary piece for The Advocate on the matter.
