Sen. Ted Cruz and his family flew to Cancun, Mexico, on Wednesday he confirmed in a statement to CNN, as a brutal winter storm ravaged his home state, leaving millions of residents without power or water or clean water.
The Texas Republican said in the statement that he flew down for a night because his daughters “asked to take a trip with friends.”
“With school cancelled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon,” he said in the statement, CNN reported.
“My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas. We want our power back, our water on, and our homes warm. My team and I will continue using all our resources to keep Texans informed and safe,” he added.
His statement comes hours after multiple Twitter users posted photos showing Cruz and his family at Houston’s airport and aboard a flight bound for the Mexican vacation hotspot.

In a statement Thursday, Texas Democratic Party chairman Gilberto Hinojosa called Cruz’s actions “disturbing and disappointing.”
Hinojosa tore into Cruz for challenging the Electoral College vote ahead of the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, and said Cruz should now resign for “jetting off to Mexico while Texans remain dying in the cold.”
“The Texas Democratic Party calls on Ted Cruz to resign or be expelled from office,” Hinojosa said. “Barring that, we will put all of the resources we have into defeating him and every Texas Republican who abandoned us in this disaster, including Governor Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Patrick, in 2022 and 2024. We are in a battle for the soul of our state. We must restore ethics, competence, and a government that works for the people.”
Millions of Texans have been without power for days after a strong winter storm swept across the state, taxing an energy grid that is not equipped to deal with freezing temperatures.
There have been dozens of deaths related to the extreme weather after many suffered power outages and temperatures plunged into the single digits earlier in the week.
Cruz’s statement was met with scorn and ridicule on social media.
