RuPaul’s Drag Race star Charlie Hides hit back at a meme designed to mock her age.
The popular season nine contestant took to Twitter on Sunday (14 July) to share a picture someone had created using the FaceApp. It’s a new filter that allows users to choose any photo and it will age them 60 years.
In the meme Hides posted, someone used the app to age Drag Race stars RuPaul, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Yvie Oddly and Detox. They then put an unedited photo of Charlie Hides in the middle.
‘On Friday I turned 55 years old,’ Hides wrote in the accompany tweet. ‘To someone of my generation, that’s like winning the lottery.
She then added: ‘Most of the friends I had at 20 were lucky to make it to 30. So when people create memes trying to mock my age, they just remind me how very lucky I am.’
Hides is referencing the devastating AIDS epidemic of the 80s and 90s.

But then she pointed out some of the criticism she got after posting the call-out.
‘Why [are] you so sensitive?’ someone asked Hides. ‘Can’t you take a joke?’
She responded: ‘Of course I can take a joke. It’s why I’m able to say I’m 1007 years old and that I dated Leonardo DaVinci.’

In a follow-up tweet, Hides then wrote: ‘Mocking someone for being older than you is like feeling superior because you were born on a Sunday and they were born on a Tuesday.’
She also eventually made her own joke using the FaceApp, alongside a photo of her using the filter.
‘With Season one filter,’ she tweeted. ‘Without Season one filter.’

Charlie Hides came twelfth in RuPaul’s Drag Race season nine.
In 2015, she came under fire for doing blackface.
She had a black character she assumed for years known as Laquisha Jonz. It was only in 2015 that she retired the character after a petition labeled her as racist and misogynistic.
Hides then apologized, saying: ‘The last thing I want to do is contribute to real problems. I want to be a solution… The last thing I ever wanted to do was to demean a group of people.’
