GLAAD Calls Out “60 Minutes” For Implying YouTubers Are “Brainwashing Kids, Turning Them Trans”

GLAAD released a statement on Sunday calling out CBS’s 60 minutes program for running a segment that “wrongfully implied that trans YouTubers and online communities which affirm trans youth are somehow brainwashing kids and turning them trans.”

“That is dangerous and at the same time ridiculous,” GLAAD said in a statement calling out the segment that ran under the title ‘Transgender Healthcare.’ “Aren’t we past arguing that media can turn people gay or trans?”

The 14-minute segment opened by discussing Arkansas’s ban on transgender minors receiving gender-affirming care.

Journalist Lesley Stahl began by noting that major medical associations have come out forcefully against laws like this one and that there are “decades” of research backing the efficacy of gender-affirming care.

But the segment’s focus quickly turned toward detransitioners, or people who start a process of transition and later change their mind. According to some studies, between one- to two percent of people detransition.

Read GLAAD’s full statement below: “Tonight @60Minutes @LesleyRStahl aired a shameful segment fearmongering about trans youth. Parents of trans youth could walk away with the false belief that young people are being rushed into medical transition. That is simply untrue. As the piece noted, every major medical association supports affirming, age-appropriate care for trans youth and the guidelines for that care are safe and well-established. And yet, the majority of the story was devoted to “raising concerns” about youth accessing that care.”

“The segment also wrongfully implied that trans YouTubers and online communities which affirm trans youth are somehow brainwashing kids and turning them trans. That is dangerous and at the same time ridiculous. Aren’t we past arguing that media can turn people gay or trans? At a time when over 30 states have introduced bills targeting trans people, #60Minutes spotlighted the real harm such bills will have, but also chose to platform activists who try to sow doubt about the need for trans-affirming healthcare.”

“Furthermore, failing to disclose that a person profiled in the story is the president of a group that actively seeks to limit affirming transition-related healthcare is poor journalism and a disservice to viewers. #60Minutes heard concerns from several trans leaders and, after spending months on the segment, they delivered a piece which still promulgates the same anti-trans dog whistles that we hear from anti-LGBTQ activists and in state legislatures like Arkansas.”
