A 25-year-old Republican congressional candidate in North Carolina attacked a journalist over his work for Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey.
Madison Cawthorn admitted this week to being behind a website that attacked journalist Tom Fiedler for “aim[ing] to ruin white males running for office.”
“Tom Fieldler [sic.] who works with Moe Davis’ advocates, is working to tear down Madison Cawthorn,” the archived version moetaxes.com reads. “He quit his academia job in Boston to work for non-white males, like Cory Booker, who aims to ruin white males running for office.”
Sen. Booker of New Jersey has never said anything about ruining white men running for office.
Fiedler, who has been covering the campaign for a nonprofit website, volunteered for Booker’s 2020 presidential campaign before returning to reporting. He was previously dean of the Boston University College of Communications.
The text was later edited to say, “[Fieldler] quit his academia job in Boston to become a political operative and is an unapologetic defender of left-wing identity politics.”
In an interview with The Mountaineer on Friday, Cawthorn admitted he’d made a critical mistake.
“I went and watched that video where they got that actual quote from Thomas Fiedler, saying his goal was to work for nonwhite males,” he said. “It was a major syntax error that was not clear that we were quoting him. Without context, that looks awful. At the end of the day, the buck stops with me. I should have read deeper into the moetaxes.com website.”
“At the end of the day, someone on my staff, not exactly sure who, made a mistake,” Cawthorn added. “I did approve the moetaxes website. I wish I had gone back and really read that and said, ‘Hey this could be ripped out of context.’”
Cawthorn’s opponent, Moe Davis, ripped the GOP candidate in a statement: “Revelations about Madison Cawthorn’s blatantly racist comment come days after over 150 former classmates at Patrick Henry College — more than half the entire student body during his time there — signed a letter and posted it online calling Mr. Cawthorn a ‘sexual predator’ who lied and vandalized property while attending the college for a little over a semester in 2016-17.”
Cawthorn has drawn scrutiny for his comments on race in the past, particularly over an Instagram post on his “bucket list” desire to visit Adolf Hitler’s nest. In the same post, he referred to Hitler as “Fuherer.”
In August, Cawthorn was busted peddling a right-wing conspiracy to his supporters from a private border wall in Texas warning that American children are being kidnapped by “a large group of cartels” and then being sold on “the sex slave market.”
Cawthorn, according to a fact-check by the Citizen-Times, was echoing discredited child sex trafficking claims promoted by the extremist conspiracy theory movement.
During a lengthy interview with Turning Point co-founder Charlie Kirk, Cawthorn claimed the LGBT movement used to be “just two people who want to be able to get married.” But transgender rights are a step too far for Cawthorn. “Now it’s saying we need to be able to have gender reassignment surgery for 12-year-olds,” he warned.
