A homophobic Iowa caucus-goer was horrified to learn that she had just thrown her support behind the first openly gay American to become a serious presidential candidate, former Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

In the nearly two-minute video, an unidentified Iowa voter reacts with shock and disgust after learning from a Buttigieg precinct captain that she had just supported a married gay man.

“Are you saying that he has a same-sex partner,” the voter asked.

“Yes, he is married to him,” she is told.

“Are you kidding? Then I don’t want anybody like that in the White House. So can I have my card back?” the woman asks.

“I don’t know, you signed it,” the Buttigieg volunteer informs her. “We could go ask.”

“The whole point of it is, though, he’s a human being right? Just like you and me and it shouldn’t really matter,” she continued.

“Well, he better read the bible,” the voter shot back.

“He does, and he says that God doesn’t choose a political party,” the volunteer informs the woman before she asks, “Why hasn’t this been brought out before?”

“It’s common knowledge,” she responds.

“I never heard it,” the voter replies.

After a back and forth about what the Bible says about homosexuality, the volunteer told the woman: “I think we are interpreting [the Bible] differently and that’s okay because everybody gets to have their own beliefs, but what I teach my son is that love is love and we are all human beings.”
