Right-wing Hungarian Member of the European Parliament József Szájer has quit after being caught with drugs and fleeing a 20-person orgy.
Szájer allegedly climbed out of a window to evade police when they raided the ‘COVID lockdown orgy’ in Brussels, Belgium.
He was allegedly spotted ‘fleeing along the gutter’ from the house party, which happened above a gay bar.
Now he has quit as an MEP – humiliating Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his right-wing Fidesz party.
This year alone, the party has caused controversy by preventing trans people from changing legal gender and trying to stop same-sex couples from adopting. Fidesz has vowed to defend what it calls ‘Christian values’.
Szájer has now apologised for breaking Belgium’s lockdown rules. He cited ‘increasing mental strain’ as his reason for resigning from his seat in the parliament which he has held for 16 years.
‘This was irresponsible on my part’
Belga news agency said police visited the address in Brussels after neighbors complained of noise and breaches of lockdown rules.
They allegedly found 20 people inside. Most were men and some were naked.
A spokeswoman for the Brussels region’s deputy public prosecutor said Szájer was spotted ‘fleeing along the gutter’ and that ‘the man’s hands were bloody’.
A statement from the prosecutors said: ‘It is possible that he may have been injured while fleeing. Narcotics were found in his backpack.’
Initially, the MEP wasn’t able to produce identification documents but police took him home where he gave them his diplomatic passport.
Szájer has admitted attending the party. But he said:
‘I didn’t use drugs, I told the police on the spot I was willing to undergo an official test, but they didn’t do one.
‘The police said an ecstasy pill was found. It was not mine, I don’t know who planted it or how. I made a statement to the police about this.
‘I am sorry that I broke the rules of assembly. This was irresponsible on my part, and I will take the sanctions that come with it.’
Diplomats involved
Szájer pleaded parliamentary immunity on Friday. However the European Parliament says immunity only covers an MEP’s official duties, not their private life. He is now under investigation for breaching COVID-19 regulations and a drugs offense.
However, he may not be the only European official to end up in hot water over the incident. Local reports suggest several diplomats were also involved.
Belgium is currently in its second pandemic lockdown. Restaurants and bars are closed, a curfew is in place and there’s a limit of four people gathering in public places.
