Vice President Mike Pence was greeted by a fabulous rainbow flag display this week as he arrived in Reykjavik to meet with President Guðni Jóhannesson of Iceland.

Pence met with Jóhannesson on Wednesday at Hofdi House, across the street from the IT company Advania, which had hoisted several rainbow flags on the morning of his visit, according to The Guardian.

“We just felt the need to celebrate diversity today and wanted to show that by flying the flags,” Ægir Már Þórisson, Advania’s director, told the news outlet Iceland Monitor.

A nearby office housing the headquarters for the Efling trade union had also switched the flags on its masts for rainbow ones.

AP White House reporter Jill Colvin tweeted a photo of the display and noted: “Rainbow flags on display outside the Höfði House, where Vice President Mike Pence is holding meetings this afternoon in Iceland. It’s the site of the famous summit between Reagan and Gorbachev.”

Bloomberg’s White House correspondent, Justin Sink, pointed out on Twitter that Jóhannesson had been wearing a rainbow bracelet in pictures showing him shaking Pence’s hand.

Eliza Reid, Iceland’s first lady, also wore a rainbow bracelet for the occasion.

Pence, a conservative Christian, has argued previously that same-sex marriage is a sign of “societal collapse” and, as governor of Indiana, signed legislation that would allow businesses and individuals to discriminate against people based on their sexuality. Pence reversed course and signed an amended version after a nationwide outcry to the law. Pence has also opposed expanding hate crimes to include sexual orientation and gender identity, notes the Washington Post.
