Leading US trans group endorses Joe Biden for President

The biggest US transgender activist group has endorsed Joe Biden, saying he has ‘a strong agenda’ to help the trans and non-binary community.

The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) Action Fund compared Biden with President Donald Trump who they say is running the ‘discrimination administration’.

Mara Keisling, executive director of the Action Fund, said former Vice President Biden has proved he can get ‘big ideas done’:

‘Joe Biden is the advocate and president we need at this consequential moment.

‘He has the temperament, the experience and wisdom to lead our country.

‘Throughout his career in public service, work as a private citizen through the Biden Foundation, and now his campaign to lead our nation, Biden has demonstrated his commitment to transgender people and the LGBTQ community.

‘Biden has a strong agenda for addressing the issues that face transgender Americans, a record of getting big ideas done during his time as Vice President in the Obama-Biden administration and a history of ensuring that transgender people are protected.’

In particular Keisling praised Biden for the protections he secured for trans women in the Violence Against Women Act.

‘I will protect every single right you have’

In January, Biden won praise for promising to support trans rights without compromise.

He said: ‘Let’s be clear: Transgender equality is the civil rights issue of our time. There is no room for compromise when it comes to basic human rights.’

Moreover, he made detailed promises to support trans healthcare and guarantee trans rights when he spoke in the Action Fund’s Transform the White House interview series.

During the interview, he indicated his late son Beau Biden had highlighted the importance of trans rights to him. He said that Beau had passed ‘the first non-discrimination law for trans people in the State of Delaware’ while he was the state’s attorney general.

Biden went on to say that Trump has ‘eviscerated so many basic civil rights’.

By contrast Biden promised that under his presidency trans people will have better access to healthcare. He promised: ‘Everything is covered by the insurance under the Affordable Care Act.’

Furthermore he added: ‘I promise you I will protect every single right you have. And you’ll have every right every other American has across the board without exception.’

He also addressed people who use religion to attack trans people.

Biden said: ‘We are all God’s children. It is a simple proposition. The idea that someone can tell you that you can’t be who you are in your heart and soul is just wrong.

‘The sin is not being LGBTQ, the sin is not allowing you to be who you are in your heart.’

Trump has attacked trans healthcare and put students at risk

In concluding their endorsement, the Action Fund criticized Trump for ‘consistently woking to alienate, harm, and erase transgender people’.

Keisling added: ‘The Trump administration is really the discrimination administration. President Trump has attacked transgender health care, put transgender students unnecessarily at risk and led a consistent and unrelenting effort to rollback protections for LGBTQ Americans.

‘Joe Biden is the clear choice for president of the United States, and the NCTE Action Fund is proud to endorse him.’

There are now less than six months until Biden and Trump go head-to-head for the election on 3 November.
