Lil Nas X Just Became The First Openly Gay Artist To Win A Country Music Award

Lil Nas X made history Wednesday night at the 53rd CMA Awards when he became the first openly gay musician to take home a Country Music Award.

His hit “Old Town Road,” which dominated at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for 19 weeks, was named the “Musical Event of the Year.” The song is a collaboration with veteran country singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

The award was announced on “Good Morning America” earlier that day.

“LETS GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!” he tweeted when he was announced as the winner in the category.

The 20-year-old country rapper from Georgia came out of the closet in July on the last day of Pride month.

Lil Nas X also took home an MTV Video Music Award earlier this year for “Old Town Road,” besting Drake, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift. He also became the first LGBTQ artist to win that award.
