Lil Nas X Prayed to Become Straight Before Coming Out as Gay

Lil Nas X has revealed that he prayed to become straight before accepting that he was gay and coming out publicly earlier this year.

In a preview of an interview with Gayle King for CBS This Morning, the 20-year-old rapper said he had hoped being gay was just a phase after growing up hearing homophobic comments. He said he knew from a young age he was gay, a realization that became even more apparent during his teenage years.

“I would just like pray, and pray, and pray…that it was like a phase, that it would go away,” he said.

“Me being in this position, it’s easy for me. But some little boy ten miles from here, it’s not going to be good for him,” he added, reflecting on his newfound place in society as a rich and famous artist.

King asked if he thought coming out would help others who were similarly “struggling with it.”

“I think it’s going to always help. You still have a long way to go, because it’s not like everybody is messing with me now,” he continued. But he added that “somebody who’s listening to me in school right now, it’s like, ’[You’re] gay, cause you’re listening to him.’ So, there’s still a lot to be done, of course, but I do believe it’s helping.”

Lil Nas X has previously said he considered never coming out, but that he hoped his decision to do so could open doors for others.
