Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio took to Twitter Saturday to share his thoughts about the death of civil rights icon, Georgia Rep. John Lewis who died late Friday night after a bout with Stage IV pancreatic cancer.
“It was an honor to know & be blessed with the opportunity to serve in Congress with JohnLewis a genuine & historic American hero. May the Lord grant him eternal peace,” Rubio wrote in a tweet Saturday afternoon.
Why is *every Republican* so bad at this? Here’s Marco Rubio offering his condolences over the death of John Lewis atop a picture of him speaking to *Elijah Cummings*. pic.twitter.com/X7kYQ9cg44

But as many Twitter users were quick to point out, the picture the Florida senator shared did not show him with Lewis but instead showed him standing next to another late Black lawmaker — Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings who died unexpectedly in October 2019 at the age of 68.
Business Insider reports that the mistaken photo was “even briefly Rubio’s profile image on Twitter before it along with his tweet disappeared.”
In a follow-up tweet, Rubio acknowledged he “tweeted an incorrect photo” and shared what appears to be a screenshot image of himself with Lewis from 2017 appearance in Miami.
Earlier today I tweeted an incorrect photo
John Lewis was a genuine American hero
I was honored to appear together in Miami 3 years ago at an event captured in video below

Sen. Rubio’s mistake was ruthlessly mocked online:

Of all the Republican responses to John Lewis’s death, Marco Rubio not being able to tell Black people apart was the most honest.

Heckuva day for top Florida elected leaders responding to the death of civil rights icon and Rep. John Lewis:
1) Gov. Ron DeSantis refuses to even comment on it
2) And Sen. Marco Rubio confused Lewis with former Rep. Elijah Cummings (also deceased) https://t.co/RiKmNLlpyu
