Meet the New Lead Characters From “The L Word: Generation Q”

The minds behind The L Word: Generation Q just gave fans the first in-depth look at the revival’s new set of queer protagonists.

In an exclusive script preview on Entertainment Weekly, writer-showrunner Marja-Lewis Ryan revealed tidbits from the sequel to the beloved Showtime series, which premiered back in 2004 and ended its run in 2009. The first page of the script introduces new characters and exes-turned-BFFs Dani and Micah.

“My pitch was ‘Take what the show was and make it a lot more inclusive,’” Ryan told EW, “so Dani is cis, [and] Micah is trans.”

Ryan was tight-lipped when pressed for details about the main characters and plot of the spinoff, though she did hint at Alice’s infamous chart making a reappearance.

“Let’s see if I can say it without saying anything: I think it’s important to stay true to the characters,” Ryan added, “and I did my best to show the evolution of what that might look like in 10 years.”

Ryan isn’t alone in her ambitious endeavor to breathe new life into an old favorite: The L Word’s original showrunner Ilene Chaiken is executive producing, as are beloved cast members Katherine Moennig (Shane), Jennifer Beals (Bette), and Leisha Hailey (Alice). Shane, Bette, and Alice are all slated to appear in the revival, too.

Head over to EW for the full script preview, including annotations from Ryan herself, and look out for The L Word: Generation Q on Showtime later this year.
