Most Americans Support Trans Military Service in New Survey

Donald Trump’s opinions on transgender people in the military look to be wildly out of step with most Americans.

According to a new poll from Gallup, 71 percent of Americans support allowing transgender men and women to serve in the military. Around 26 percent of respondents oppose and 2 percent have no opinion.

“As President Donald Trump’s ban on most transgender military servicemembers continues to face legal challenges, 71% of Americans support allowing openly transgender men and women to serve in the military,” says a Gallup statement accompanying the poll.

The results come from a poll that was conducted in May, prior to a recent Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that allows the ban to stand for the time being.

And the findings come just days after the House of Representatives voted to block funding that would be used to fully implement the policy. However, the measure’s chances of passing in the Republican-controlled Senate are considered slim.

Trump’s transgender ban stands to impact over 13,700 active service members. Officials at the Pentagon have not released any information on how many of those people have been asked to leave service.

The president recently doubled down on his ban during an interview with Piers Morgan where he blamed the costs of drugs related to trans health care as a primary reason for the ban.

Trump was not aware that the military currently spends more money on Viagra, a drug used to aid in sexual performance, at a bigger cost than the lifesaving care these service members were being given.
