Is putting your pronouns in your profile “performative” allyship? I say no – but it depends on one’s intentions. Let me explain: If an ally puts their pronouns in their online meeting box to let other people know their pronouns because they like when people get their pronouns right, great. If they do it to make their colleagues & teammates feel empowered to do it too to help change the culture of their team or organization, awesome. If they do it to make a trans or non-binary teammate, classmate, or coworker feel safer to do the same, excellent. If they do it so they seem woke but then misgender someone else, not cool. If they do it but then say transphobic things at lunch, no good. If they do it but then vote for Trump, nope – that is performative. I think in this case it’s tough to gauge “performative allyship” based on one action – because being an ally isn’t a one-time deal. You aren’t an ally in one situation & then get to wear that badge the rest of your life. Allies keep showing up. Allyship is a practice. It is an ongoing process. And to be clear, allies don’t always get it right – but they keep showing up, keep learning, keep trying. This is about putting your pronouns in your profile, but it is definitely, most certainly, absolutely NOT JUST about putting your pronouns in your profile. It is about creating a space where others can address you appropriately & opening space & empowering others to express themselves. A person is creating a more inclusive & open space by adding your pronouns to their profile, even if (or especially if!) you think it’s obvious that people know their pronouns. AND THEN: that person needs to keep showing up. If you think putting your pronouns in your online meeting profile is just performative, you may want to consider how you behave in the rest of your life outside off those meetings, and how your actions may not be congruent with being an ally. I think we need to normalize saying our pronouns. If putting your pronouns in your profile is performative, then consider this a request to perform. #pronouns #trans #transgender #transathlete #normalizepronouns #enby #nonbinary #theythem
