‘My AR Is Ready For You’

A transphobic Texas GOP state lawmaker was reported to the FBI after he tweeted that his “AR is ready” for former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) after the Democratic presidential candidate called for a mandatory buyback of assault rifles during Thursday night’s Democratic debate.

Asked about his proposal to take AR-15’s and AK-47’s off the streets, O’Rourke said, “It’s a weapon that’s designed to kill people on a battlefield. If the high impact, high velocity round shreds everything inside of your body. … When we see that being used against children.”

“Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” the former congressman said.

O’Rourke repeated the a similar statement on Twitter shortly after the debate ended, to which Texas state Rep. Briscoe Cain replied, “My AR is ready for you Robert Francis.” (Beto O’Rourke’s given name is Robert Francis.)

“This is a death threat, Representative. Clearly, you shouldn’t own an AR-15—and neither should anyone else,” O’Rourke responded on Twitter, sharing a screengrab of Cain’s message.

A spokesperson for O’Rourke confirmed that his campaign reported the post to the FBI.

Cain’s tweet was removed by Twitter Friday morning for violating the social media platform’s “violent threat” policy.

Cain was elected to represent Texas House District 128 in 2016.

In 2017, Cain said violence against trans women was nothing more than “dudes walking around in dresses getting beat up.”

That same year, the lawmaker introduced two anti-trans amendments to Texas’ House budget.
