Marti Gould Cummings wants you to tuck the polls in 2021.

The New York nightlife legend has announced that they will be running for a seat on the New York City Council, representing Manhattan’s District 7 in the 2021 election.

“When I win, it’s going to be a really fucking awesome feeling,” Marti told Out. “I believe this is my calling. I believe this is what I am put on this earth to do — to not only be a drag queen who’s funny, silly, and entertaining, but somebody who took that platform and used it for something bigger. I’m really nervous, scared, and excited and ready to do the work.”

Inspired by the results of the 2016 presidential election, Cummings founded HK Dems, which in 2017 helped elect a new district leader in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. Marti now also sits on the Mayor’s Nightlife Advisory Board in New York and the board of directors for the Ali Forney Center for homeless LGBTQ youth.

Marti was also featured as part of 2018’s Logo30, where they were highlighted for her political activism. The New York-based queen is originally from Kennedyville, Maryland, and earlier this year they founded Midshore Pride, the first LGBTQ Pride celebration on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“We have to continue the movement for equality and progressive values. That’s why I’m running,” explains Marti. “I think queer people deserve a seat at the table.”

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was “just the cutest thing ever.”
