Pete Buttigieg is ending his presidential bid after a fourth-place finish in South Carolina on Saturday, ending a meteoric rise that saw the once-obscure former mayor of South Bend, Ind., become a top-tier contender in the race for the Democratic nomination, reports The Washington Post.
Buttigieg, who became the first gay candidate to make a high-profile presidential run, is expected to make the official announcement later tonight in South Bend.
Hours earlier, speaking to NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Buttigieg vowed that “we’ll be assessing at every turn not only what the right answer is for the campaign, but making sure that every step we take is in the best interest of the party and that goal of making sure we defeat Donald Trump — because our country can’t take four more years of this.”
“Pete believes this is the right thing to do for our country, for our party and for Americans across the country eager to heal our divided nation, defeat this president and work to fix our broken politics,” a senior campaign aide told Fox News.
James Skoufis, Senator for New York’s 39th District, celebrated Pete’s historic campaign: “I was proud to commit to Pete Buttigieg’s campaign pre-Iowa and am even prouder of the race he ran.
