Queer Actress Kelly McGillis Won’t Be in the New “Top Gun” Movie

Nope, Kelly McGillis will not be appearing in 2020’s Top Gun: Maverick.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 62-year-old actress, who splashed onto the scene as Tom Cruise’s bombshell love interest Charlie in the 1986 film, confirmed that she won’t be involved in the Top Gun sequel. In fact, she hasn’t even seen the trailer.

“I have no idea because I don’t know where I’ll be,” McGillis told the magazine when asked whether she’d attend any promotional events for the film, which is slated for a 2020 release.

“Movies are odd things,” the actress added, noting that she took a step back from Hollywood to focus on staying sober and parenting her children. “I don’t really keep in touch with anybody. I think I’ve spoken to a couple of people occasionally, but the truth is, movies are very odd work situations because you have a lot of people who come together from all different parts of the world.”

Notably, Cruise is on board to reprise his role of Maverick, the sequel’s eponymous protagonist. According to Cruise, 48-year-old actress Jennifer Connelly has already been cast to play his new love interest.

McGillis doesn’t know Connelly personally, but she did tell Entertainment Tonight that she’s “so glad that she got that opportunity. I’m glad for her.” That’s certainly a warm welcome from the OG Top Gun star, who came out as a lesbian at age 51 in a 2009 interview with SheWired.

Lookout for Top Gun: Maverick in June 2020, and send a prayer or two up to Gay Jesus for another homoerotic shirtless volleyball scene.
