RuPaul is a club queen again!

If you have been following any RuPaul news outside the world of Drag Race, then you are probably aware of AJ and the Queen, the Netflix original series starring the supermodel of the world that has been teasing for months.

Netflix

For AJ and the Queen, RuPaul not only stars, but also serves as a writer and executive producer, alongside Michael Patrick King, the Emmy-winning Sex and the City showrunner also known for his work on The Comeback and 2 Broke Girls.

The 10-episode hourlong comedy stars Ru as Ruby Red, “a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990s R/V with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway,” according to an official synopsis.

“As these two misfits, one tall, one small, travel from city to city, Ruby’s message of love and acceptance winds up touching people and changing their lives for the better. Oh, and RuPaul performs a killer musical number in every drag club.”

Now we finally get to meet Ruby Red in a new teaser for the series. In the sickening preview we get our first glimpse of Ruby serving head-to-toe red realness while she sashays down club runways all while a new Ru track beats in the background.

The children are not ready.

A NewNowNext previously reported, Chloë Sevigny drag impressionist and Bright Colors and Bold Patterns star Drew Droege has even dropped a couple tidbits about the show. As a guest on Vulture’s Drag Race recap podcast, What the Tuck?, Droege revealed he was a writer on AJ and the Queen.

“It’s going to be magical,” he said. “People are going to lose their minds over how good of an actor Ru is. He’s not playing himself. He’s definitely playing an original character. We have a lot of Drag Race alum and incredible huge stars [on the show] as well.” As if we weren’t excited enough already!

Netflix

It was previously announced that Josh Segarra (Broadway’s On Your Feet!) will play Hector, Ruby’s boyfriend, “who has a dark and dangerous side.” Matthew Wilkas (Gayby) has been cast in a recurring role as a hot cop.

Clear your calendars now for Jan. 10 when AJ and the Queen hits Netflix.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was “just the cutest thing ever.”
