Sara Gilbert’s Wife and Kid Surprise Her With Farewell Song on “The Talk”

It’s hard to talk through tears.

During Sara Gilbert’s final episode of The Talk, which aired Friday on CBS, Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Eve toasted their departing co-host by sharing emotional memories. But Gilbert was also moved by a surprise musical performance from her wife, Grammy-nominated songwriter Linda Perry, and daughter Sawyer Gilbert Adler.

“I want everybody to know that this is a true, very inspiring human being here that is always trying to advance herself and everybody else around her,” said Perry of her wife before inviting 12-year-old Sawyer to the stage.
 

“So we’re going to play a song for her because it’s her last day,” Sawyer told the crowd. “She thinks we’re playing ’Shallow’ but I didn’t think that was special enough, so I wrote you a song. It’s called ’Mama.’” Gilbert watched with tears in her eyes as Sawyer sang the heartwarming original ballad while Perry accompanied on piano.

“To our audience, none of us would be here without you,” said Gilbert at the end of the show. “Whether you have agreed with me or not, you’ve let me into your homes and you’ve allowed me to have a voice and I will miss that more than you know. This show has always been about community and connection and I want to thank you for letting me belong and thank you for listening.”

Gilbert, who created The Talk in 2010 and has also served as an executive producer, announced in April that she would be leaving the CBS gabfest at the end of the ninth season, calling the decision “extremely difficult” but explaining that her “life was slightly out of balance.” She will be replaced on the panel next season by Marie Osmond.

As an executive producer of last year’s Roseanne reboot, in which she reprised her role as Darlene, Gilbert was one of the first to speak out publicly against star Roseanne Barr’s racist tweets before ABC canceled the hit series. She stayed with the show after it was reimagined without Barr as The Conners; its second season is set to premiere September 24.

Gilbert came out publicly in 2010. She and Perry married in 2014 and welcomed a child together the next year. Gilbert has two children, including Sawyer, from her previous relationship with TV producer Alison Adler.
