Second bomb found in London’s Soho, police shut streets

[ad_1]

Police have shut down part of London’s Soho again this evening after finding a second bomb in just two days.

Yesterday’s police cordon covered much of the UK capital’s LGBT+ district. Today’s is much smaller and is focused around Dean Street and its side roads.

Like yesterday’s bomb, this one is believed to date from World War II. During the war, the Luftwaffe – Nazi Air Force – dropped 503 tons of high explosive and 30,000 incendiary bombs on the UK capital.

GSN understands the second bomb was discovered close to the one yesterday. Builders have been constructing an extension to Soho Hotel on Dean Street.

Closures again

At present the road and business closures are much smaller than yesterday. However police are unable to confirm when the streets will reopen.

Yesterday a Royal Engineers bomb disposal unit was called in and removed the half-tonne device.

Roads now closed are:

Dean St at junctions with  Old Compton Street, Carlisle Street and Bateman Street.
Bateman St at junction with Frith Street.
Meard Street at junction with Wardour Street.
St Annes Court at junction with Wardour Street.
Bourchier St at junction with Wardour Street.

Dean Street Express, one of the UK’s most popular sexual health clinics has announced it has to shut for the second time in two days.

And Soho Theatre is currently not accessible. Staff tweeted that they are currently liaising with the Metropolitan Police.

Update: Open again at 5.20pm

Metropolitan Police have announced within the last few minutes that they have reopened the streets.

They said: ‘Anyone evacuated can return and once again we appreciate your patience.’

Soho Theatre tweeted: ‘Insert happy OPEN dance here as @MPSSoho has just sent us a message that reads THE AREA HAS JUST OPENED.’
