Sony is planning to make Spider-Man bisexual and give him a boyfriend

A bisexual Spider-Man could be coming to a cinema near you if producers at Sony get their way.

Movies, games and TV site We Got This Covered say reliable sources confirm Sony is developing a live action Spider-Verse movie.

The movie will unite current Spider-Man actor Tom Holland with his predecessors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

The sources also say that Sony particularly wants to get Garfield back as they want him to portray a bisexual version of the hero. And they plan to give him a boyfriend.

Actors back LGBT+ Spider-Man

The idea of making your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man gay or bi is not a new one.

Holland said last year that Marvel superheroes don’t have to be ‘a straight, white guy’. And he hopes Spider-Man will be gay ‘one day’.

But Garfield was even more outspoken about wanting Peter Parker to be bi.

In one interview, Garfield said: ‘I’m excited to get to the point where we don’t have to have this conversation. Where we can have a pansexual Spider-Man?’

And he also commented: ‘What I believe about Spider-Man is that he does stand for everybody: black, white, Chinese, Malaysian, gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender…

‘He represents the underdog and those marginalized who come up against great prejudice.’

Apparently Garfield had Marc Webb, director of The Amazing Spider-Man, on his side.

Rumors suggest they had even picked out a boyfriend for Parker. Michael B Jordan, who went on to star in Marvel’s Black Panther as Killmonger was lined up to take the role.

But rumors circulated last year that Stan Lee, Spider-Man’s creator, refused to back the move. And that’s what cost Garfield his role as Parker.

After Garfield’s remarks, Lee commented: ‘He’s becoming bisexual? Really? Who have you been talking to?

‘And if it’s true, I’m going to make a couple of phone calls. I figure one sex is enough for anybody.’

Moreover, in 2015, leaked Sony e-mails revealed a contractual obligation that Spider-Man be white and heterosexual.

New Spider-Verse, new rules?

Since then, things may have shifted. Many people have been demanding Marvel and DC do more to represent the LGBT+ community.

And the success of Deadpool 2 – in which the hero was gay – may have helped them build confidence.

For now, We Got This Covered can’t confirm the story. They insist their sources are good but say it’s ‘just something that’s being explored right now’.
