This woman voted Pete Buttigieg then got spooked when she found out he is gay

Many have said the Iowa Democratic Caucus was chaotic. But one homophobic woman added an element of farce when she voted for Pete Buttigieg without realising he is gay.

An Iowa caucus staffer found herself calmly explaining LGBT+ issues and the true meaning of Christianity to the woman. And she did it perfectly.

Gay former mayor Pete Buttigieg surprised many last night with his victory in Iowa.

With 71% of the vote counted amid a messy voting process, Buttigieg emerged with a narrow lead over Bernie Sanders. He secured 26.8% of the state delegates counted, compared to Sanders’ 25.2%. Meanwhile Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden are trailing far behind.

It was the first formal stage in the contest to see which Democrat will take on Donald Trump in the race for the White House this year.

And, while there’s a long way to go, Buttigieg’s success in Iowa is a big step in his bid to be the first openly gay and youngest ever US president.

But he almost lost one vote. One woman who had already cast her ballot asked to take it back in a farcical encounter.

Openly gay Buttigieg

Buttigieg came out publicly in 2015 while mayor of South Bend, Indiana. And he won re-election the following year, with an increased vote share. Moreover, in 2018, Buttigieg announced his engagement to Chasten Glezman, a junior high school teacher.

However, it seems not everyone got the memo. It was definitely all news to one woman who had voted for him in Iowa.

‘Are you saying he has a same-sex partner?’ she asks.

‘Yes,’ a staffer replies.

‘Are you kidding? Then I don’t want anybody like that in the White House. So can I have my card back?’

When the staffer points out Buttigieg’s sexuality shouldn’t matter, the woman turns to the Bible.

Again, she doesn’t seem to know he is also a committed Christian. But she does believe the Bible says men should only marry women. In fact, the Bible doesn’t say anything either for or against same-sex marriage.

With the voter wanting to change her mind, the female staffer offers to help her find someone she can talk to about it.

‘It all just went down the toilet’

Meanwhile the woman says: ‘It all just went right down the toilet is where it all just went.’

‘You have a total right to your opinion and I’m not trying to tell you to think otherwise,’ the staffer replies.

‘But I just ask you to look inside your heart because you sound like a Christian woman to me and I’m a Christian woman and my god wants me to love everybody.’

But the woman insists: ‘That’s not what the Bible says. You must just not believe it then if you think it’s ok for somebody to marry to a same-sex person.’

At that point the staffer lays her hand on her own son’s shoulder and says:

‘I think we are just interpreting it differently and that’s ok. Because everybody gets to have their own beliefs. But what I teach my son is that love is love and we are all human.’
