Another transgender woman has been murdered, the eighth so far this year, and all of them have been African-American.
Dallas police identified a body pulled Saturday from White Rock Lake as that of Chynal Lindsey, 26, The Dallas Morning News reports. Her body displayed “obvious signs of homicidal violence,” Police Chief U. Reneé Hall said at a news conference Monday afternoon.
In addition to being the eighth Black transgender woman murdered in the U.S. this year, Lindsey is the second in Dallas within two weeks. Muhlaysia Booker, 23, was shot to death May 18 on a Dallas street, a month after she had been beaten by a mob in the middle of an apartment complex. She was found less than a mile from the lake where Lindsey was found.
There are two other unsolved murders of Black trans women on the Dallas police force’s records: Brittany White, 29, fatally shot last October, and another woman in 2015. The Morning News article did not include the latter woman’s name, but The Advocate reported on the shooting death of Shade Schuler, 22, in Dallas that year.
Additionally, trans woman Carla Patricia Flores-Pavon, a Latina, was strangled to death in her Dallas apartment in May 2018. There has been a suspect arrested and charged with murder in that case, Jimmy Eugene Johnson III, 24.
The Dallas police have also reached out to the FBI for help in solving Lindsey’s murder, and they are looking into similarities in recent attacks on trans women. In addition to the murders, in April of this year, a 26-year-old Dallas trans woman was stabbed repeatedly and left for dead but survived. She described her assailant to police, but no arrest has been made.
