Trump says he supports Pete Buttigieg’s marriage, but what will his supporters say?

President Donald J. Trump, speaking with Fox News host Steve Hilton, showed surprising support for his possible Democratic opponent, Pete Buttigieg’s marriage to his husband, Chasten.

Hilton commented that he liked seeing the couple campaigning together.

“I think it’s good,” Trump said.

Hilton pressed the issue, however, saying the two men are normalizing same-sex marriages. Trump has previously mocked his presidential rival by comparing him to Alfred E. Newman and mocking his name, but chimed in to agree. 

“I think it’s absolutely fine,” said Trump. “I do.”

Hilton added that seeing the pair was “a sign of great progress in the country.” The president interrupted Hilton, saying, “I think it’s great.”

President Trump did not stop there, commenting that some will likely take issue with the couple.

“I think that’s something that perhaps some people will have a problem with,” said Trump, adding, “I have no problem with it whatsoever.” 

GLAAD noted the exchange on Twitter, pointing out the hypocrisy of the President’s statement. 

The Trump administration has been of the worst for LGBTQ people, even though many mistook an anti-Muslim statement said during the campaign as proof that he would be supportive of LGBTQ civil rights. Instead the administration has attacked the community including trans members of the military, ramped up “religious freedom” assaults on LGBTQ rights, and  attempted to delegitimize the children of some same-sex couples.

Buttigieg, for his part, has had an ongoing back-and-forth with Vice President Mike Pence recently over his sexual orientation and both of their stances on Christianity.

Buttigieg is the first out gay Democratic candidate to run for President of the United States — and should he win, he would be the youngest person elected to the office. He is currently serving his second term as the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

Pete and Chasten Buttigieg wed on June 16, 2018 in a private ceremony.

While the Vice President has not yet spoken about Trump’s statement, anti-LGBTQ extremist Peter LaBarbera complained on social media, saying the president is wrong to accept the Buttigieg marriage.

The interview with the President will air on Sunday, followed by a live town hall with Buttigieg.
