Trump Says He’s ‘Looking Into’ Creating Government-Run Channel ‘To Put Some Real News Out There’

President Trump said during a speech Thursday that his administration is seriously “looking into” creating its own news network, comments made while railing against CNN and other news media amid coverage of an impeachment inquiry into his phone call with Ukraine.

“You know what is bad for our country? When CNN – so often I go to a foreign country, I go to a country, I meet leaders and he said uh, ‘Why do they hate your country so much?’ I said, ‘Who?’ ” Trump said during a speech in The Villages, Florida.

“You know, CNN outside of the United States is much more important than it is in the United States and a lot of what you see here is broadcast throughout the world and we used to have Radio Free Europe and Voice of America and we did that to build up our country,” he continued. “Uh, and that’s not working out too well.”

“But CNN is a voice that really seems to be the voice out there and it’s a terrible thing for our country and we outta start our own network and put some real news out there because they are so bad, they are so bad for our country,” Trump said to cheers and applause from the audience.

“They are so bad for our country I go out there and they say, ‘Boy, the media hates your country.’ And it’s just a shame, it’s just a shame. And we really are, we are looking at that, we should do something about it too,” he added.

“Put some really talented people and get a real voice out there not a voice that’s fake,” he said.

Steve Herman, the White House Bureau chief for Voice of America, responded to Trump’s comments on Twitter shortly after.

“Despite his remark, @POTUS should be well aware @VOANews is still around as he has given the US-government operated broadcaster two on-camera interviews and regularly answers questions from me and @pwidakuswara (he responded to her query this morning about the Taliban),” Herman wrote.

Herman also tweeted a statement he attributed to Amanda Bennett, director of Voice of America, on the matter.

“VOA has always been — and still is – – proud of its mission to provide objective, credible news and information to countries around the world that have no other access to it and to tell America’s story overseas,” Bennett said in the statement.
