The Trump administration’s Bible study teacher says coronavirus may be God’s punishment for LGBTQ people.
In a study guide posted to his blog, Ralph Drollinger lays out the case that the U.S. is being punished by God for homosexuality, environmentalism, and other things conservatives generally don’t like.

Drollinger states at the beginning of a March 21, 2020 blog post, for students of his Bible study, that “some leading evangelicals” believe that “America is now experiencing God’s judgment.”
Instead of stating whether he is or is not one of those evangelicals, he wrote an entire study guide that he says is a “biblically astute evaluation of the situation” that “strongly suggests that America and other countries of the world are reaping what China has sown due to their leaders’ recklessness and lack of candor and transparency.”
The study guide says that there are different kinds of wrath in the Bible, and that many people in the U.S. have experienced God’s “forsaking wrath.” One of the signs of being forsaken by God is homosexuality.
“Indicative of forsaking wrath is a proclivity toward lesbianism and homosexuality,” Drollinger wrote. Other signs include abortion and how the U.S. is not an explicitly Christian state, and that “the unfaithful” use positions of power in education, politics, the media, and the entertainment industry to spread “tragic, unfortunate, and costly” ideologies.
Environmentalism is also a sign of being forsaken, he says. Drollinger wrote that it “is when the abandoned serve the creature rather than the creator.” He called environmentalism an “aberration.”
This has led to “consequential wrath” on the nation.
“Relative to the coronavirus pandemic crisis, this is not God’s abandonment wrath nor His cataclysmic wrath, rather it is sowing and reaping wrath: A biblically astute evaluation of the situation strongly suggests that America and other countries of the world are reaping what China has sown due to their leaders’ recklessness and lack of candor and transparency,” he wrote in the study guide.
He specified that the U.S. is not as bad as Sodom and Gomorrah: “Abraham, if he were to plead with God for America, would have a much stronger case than he did pleading with God for Sodom and Gomorrah.”
This means that “we’ll soon see a human cure for the coronavirus,” according to Drollinger. A big claim considering a cure for the common cold has not yet been discovered.
Drollinger has been running Capitol Ministries since 2010 with the intent to influence U.S. representatives. In 2015, he expanded his ministry to include the Senate.
Last year, Drollinger bragged about his influence in the Trump Administration, claiming that several cabinet-level officials were attending Bible study meetings. He mentioned Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, former Environmental Protection Agency director Scott Pruitt, and then-Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, among others.
Drollinger said that it was the first Cabinet-level Bible study group in “at least 100 years.”
According to The Intercept, the Bible study sessions occur on Wednesday mornings and several members of the Cabinet attend: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Drollinger’s Capitol Ministries hosts Bible study groups for members of Congress, which are reportedly attended by 52 Republican lawmakers and sponsored by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Sen. John Thune (R-SD).
The People for the American Way sued after the Trump administration denied its Freedom of Information Act requests for more information about the Bible study sessions, which it said are an attempt to influence elected officials.
