Watch Kevin Hart Force Lil Nas X to Explain Homophobia

It’s #20BiTeen, so homophobia isn’t exactly new news to anyone—except Kevin Hart, apparently.

The comedian was most recently put on blast after appearing on an episode of HBO’s interview series The Shop: Uninterrupted in conversation with gay country-rapper Lil Nas X. In the segment, Lil Nas X opens up about deliberating whether he should come out after his chart-topping single “Old Town Road” catapulted him into the public eye. He takes a stab at explaining how, growing up, he was always taught that being gay was wrong.

Hart starts off on the wrong foot, interjecting, “He came out as gay! So what?! Who cares?”

“It’s not like [I was] being forced [to come out],” Lil Nas X recalls. “It’s like knowing, growing up, like, I’m growing up to hate this shit. I’m not supposed to ever like this.”

Hart then tries to play dumb, baiting Lil Nas X with questions like, “Be like what? Hate what?”

To Lil Nas X’s credit, the rapper calls out Hart:

Come on! If you’re really from the hood, you know! It’s not some…so for me, the cool dude with the song on top of every [chart], to say this, at any other time it’d be like “you’re doing it for attention” in my eyes. But if you’re doing this while you’re at the top, you know it’s for real.

Gay Twitter™ had a field day with Hart’s provocative line of questioning, especially given the comic’s fraught history with the LGBTQ community. Homophobic remarks from his past, including since-deleted tweets with words like “gay” and “fag” used as insults, infamously prompted Hart to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars back in December 2018.

Other Twitter users praised Lil Nas X for standing his ground, especially as a young black gay man in a room of older, more seasoned artists and entertainers.
