Watch Shangela Teach Kamala Harris How to Clack a Fan

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris swung by one of the world’s most famous gay bars, The Abbey in West Hollywood. No, she wasn’t there for brunch, she was making a campaign stop before Thursday night’s HRC LGBTQ town hall.

But you can’t go to a West Hollywood gay bar without running into a drag queen, and there were some RuPaul’s Drag Race superstars in the audience for Harris—including Shangela, who taught the senator how to clack a fan like a true queen. Harris nailed the fan choreo in two takes—prompting the All Stars 2 queen to proclaim her “a professional!”

“I met her tonite to chat with her about her advocacy for LGBTQ rights and Equality, and I can tell you that she has been and will continue to be a fierce ally for our community,” the Halleloo queen wrote on Instagram.

As NewNowNext previously reported, Harris unveiled a LGBTQ policy plan ahead of the HRC town hall simply titled “Kamala Harris’ Plan to Provide Equality and Dignity for All,” which touches on issues affecting LGBTQ citizens. A standout proposal from her plan is her idea to “direct the Chief Advocate for LGBTQ+ Affairs to work with transgender partners to shape new funding initiatives to support transgender persons.” Those initiatives include establishing a national transgender fellowship to “help lift up promising young leaders within the transgender community and provide them with skills and training to effect meaningful and long lasting change.”

Come through, Kamala!

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was “just the cutest thing ever.”
