Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Saunders Are Back in the “Sister Act” Habit

Whoopi Goldberg is getting back in the habit—again.

The EGOT winner, and original star of Sister Act and its 1993 sequel, announced that she would be reprising her role as lounge singer-turned-nun, Deloris Van Cartier, in next year’s revival of the Sister Act musical on London’s West End.

“Yeah, the original Deloris is back, a little older, a little seasoned but really still kind of out there,” Goldberg said in a video announcement.

She also broke the news on The View where she revealed that she had met with “resistance” to getting Sister Act 3 off the ground, so starring in this new production might prove that the franchise is not “dated.”

Goldberg’s return wasn’t the only bit of exciting casting news. Edie Monsoon herself, Jennifer Saunders, will play Mother Superior, the role originally played by Maggie Smith in the movies. Sweetie darling, this is absolutely fabulous news! This will be a reunion for the two actresses since Goldberg guest-starred on Absolutely Fabulous in the 2002 episode, “Gay.”

“This is a very special one-off opportunity created just for London to see one of the most loved actors of our time playing the part she is so famous and so loved for,” said Sister Act West End producer Jamie Wilson. “The addition of Jennifer means that Sister Act truly promises to be the ultimate night of laughs and smiles with two comedy greats.”

“It really is going to be a brilliant summer!”

Book your flights now because the new production of Sister Act will run from July 29 to August 30 at London’s Eventim Apollo theater.

Oh, happy day!

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was “just the cutest thing ever.”
