Over the last year, we’ve continued to mourn the senseless and devastating loss of Black lives due to the violent nature of white supremacy and police brutality. Even against the backdrop of a global pandemic that has disproportionately harmed Black communities, we’ve seen the pervasive nature of systemic racism work tirelessly — and unfortunately, at its best.
In response to today’s historic ruling, we commend the accountability served in the verdict of the Derek Chauvin trial for the murder of George Floyd and applaud all of the community voices who took to the stand in support of racial justice.
Though Derek Chauvin’s trial comes to a close with this momentous victory, the work to uplift George’s legacy by achieving racial justice is a movement that’s far from over — and we’re dedicated to the struggle. In the last few weeks alone, we’ve witnessed the loss of more BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), Asian-American and Black Trans lives at the hands of anti-Trans and racist violence. In fact, a recent New York Times report stated that since the beginning of Chauvin’s trial in March, at least 64 people have died at the hands of law enforcement nationwide, with Black and Latinx folks representing over half of those we’ve lost.
We grieve for Daunte Wright, Dominique Lucious, Adam Toledo and so many others — there’s more we can and must do.
The SF LGBT Center stands with — and for — our Black siblings and broader BIPOC community, and we are unequivocally committed to racial equity as a core tenet of our work long term. We will remain vigilant in combatting white supremacy and other systems of oppression by centering intersectional activism in everything we do. LGBTQ+ liberation is Black liberation. Black liberation is LGBTQ+ liberation.
