  1. I am a conservative Republican and I support gay marriage. I must confess,
though, that I was not always of this mindset. In my 20s I used to be
extremely conservative, so much so that I was a regular listener of Rush
Limbaugh and a self-described “dittohead”. I was never intentionally mean
or cruel to gays, lesbians and transgenders, but I must admit that I used
to laugh at some of the stereotypical jokes and comments including the
portrayals of many gays, lesbians and transgenders in the media. I would
like to take this opportunity to apologize to each and every gay, lesbian
and transgender person that I hurt whether they knew it or not. I regret
the way that I was back then and I stand here or sit here before you today
as someone who is proud to support gay rights and wants to see gay marriage
become legalized in all 50 states.

Some of my friends and many in the Republican party disagree with me. And
while I disagree with them, it is not always based on bigotry or prejudice,
at least not on a conscious level. However, the very nature of telling two
consenting adults who love each other that they are not allowed to get
married seems to go against the grain of every teaching in the
Judeo-Christian philosophy. Far be it from me to debate anyone on
theology, but thanks to many friends and family who helped me to evolve as
a person and to people like Ted Olson, I believe that denying gays,
lesbians and transgenders to be married is a fundamental breach of
    constitutional law.

I don’t consider myself to be a religious man, but I’m very spiritual. And
while I would never claim to speak for Jesus Christ, everything that I have
ever read or pored over about Christ leads me to believe that He would show
compassion and love for gays, lesbians and transgenders, not cast them
aside as sinners destined for the layers of Hell. Those who make the
asinine argument that allowing gays, lesbians and transgenders to get
married would pave the way for polygamous marriages in America are not only
being dishonest but foolish. Just as it was wrong some 50 years ago to
deny interracial marriages in America, so it is today with denying gay
marriage in America. If you are a true Christian, I believe that you would
see gays, lesbians and transgenders as your brothers and sisters of
Christ. They are our teachers, our bosses, our co-workers, our military
men and women fighting for our freedom. Think of the irony: denying
marriage to a gay man or lesbian woman who is overseas fighting for that
person’s freedom. It is long overdue that we acknowledged the rights of
gays, lesbians and transgenders. Because to fail to do so, would only make
it a wrong. Thank you for listening.

  2. This tears me up everytime I watch it. I wish I have a sister like Anne
    Hathaway.

  3. “Love is a human experience, not a political statement”. Beautiful…I’m in
    tears :)

  4. And that’s why she should be the queen of everything! I would pay taxes to
    her!
    You go girl!! :)))

  5. I like the statement that there shouldn’t NEED to be an award for accepting
    and respecting to others.

  8. I know it’s from 2008, but this speech needs to be heard more. Love is a
human experience, not a political statement.

  9. I’m sorry you feel that way. You’re wrong, but I can tell by your hatred of
me and my beliefs that no amount of discussion would help you to understand
    that it’s not hypocritical.

  10. This happened in 2008?! I can’t believe it took me more than four years to
come across this speech! Yet another reason to love and adore Anne Hathaway
(as if I needed another; that woman is wonderful).

  11. Nature doesn’t have intentions. But besides, gay and lesbian people can
still procreate with people of the opposite sex. There are family
arrangements where a gay couple and a lesbian couple will arrange to have
children. We are also fast approaching scientific breakthroughs that will
allow two people of the same sex to have a child with both of their DNA
represented. And besides this, gay people can adopt children.

  12. Okay, don’t get me wrong, I’ve moved way past the Princess Diaries and I
know Anne has too… But around 2:23 she seriously has such a Princess
    Diaries moment.

  13. Not phisycal, but psychological. If this isn’t true, then why nature hasn’t
given men the ability to procreate on their own? Do you really think
there’s no reason for this? I believe there is, because nature is just too
amazingly complex and well ‘designed’ to leave a matter like this to chance.

  14. “I’m not being brave, I’m being a decent human being.” We need more people
    like that! She rocks!

  15. That’s not what she’s saying. She’s saying hating someone and denying them
equal rights to your own despite their being human makes you an indecent
human being. Denying people their love, their happiness, their future…
Denying a couple with a 15 year relationship the right to see each other on
their deathbeds… That makes someone an indecent human being.

  16. Don’t start doing the same thing by being hateful yourself. And don’t
generalize the Catholic Church. Their intent is, in their mind, good. The
means, however, and some doctrine, are what are troublesome, sometimes.

  17. I’m getting a bit tired of being misunderstood or flagged as ‘bigot’ or
worse while all my comments get too many downs to be shown. I’m against
church and to me it’s just something we created as some sort of
mass-control system. Marriage, again, is CHURCH related and has nothing to
do with nature (as I told THEKODIE before when he said that “nature tells
us that we should only have sex for conceiving purposes”…that’s not true
and it’s not what I said). Adoption means FAMILY.

  18. I don’t know if a child can come out psychologically damaged being raised
by a homosexual couple instead of a conventional one, I just said that it
is not what nature has originally intended. Otherwise it would have given
men the ability to procreate on their own or women the ability to fecundate
other women. Teenager parents and drug addicts is not an argument, human
behavior prescinds from what we are talking about here.

  19. I’ve always supported gay rights and I could never understand all the
hatred over something so simple. I don’t know how people can still say
being gay is a choice when it’s been proven over and over that it’s not
that there is a gene and what I found out recently was that when a little
baby boy is in the mommy’s belly her body attacks it because it’s foreign
and tries to feminize it so the more little boys a mommy has the better the
body gets at feminizing it and the more likely he will be gay:3

  20. everything in this video is perfect EXCEPT CAN PEOPLE NOT FUCKING CLAP
    AFTER EVERY WORD OMG
