Also, the "get his goat" thing derives from the horse racing industry, where traditionally each horse would have a pet goat that lived with it and went everywhere with it – horses and goats are both herd animals, and the goat was the horse's herd. If someone wanted to upset the horse so it wouldn't race as well, abducting the goat would do that without being the sort of crime that interfering with the horse directly would be.
