When the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo hold their Opening Ceremony, there will be more publicly out Olympians competing than ever before.
Here we will track the LGBTQ athletes who are qualifying for, and competing in, the Tokyo Olympics. There will be some familiar faces, like British diver Tom Daley, among others.
There will also be many new faces for the LGBTQ community to cheer for. Some of them will be newly out. Others will be competing in their first Olympic Games.
We know women’s soccer will have more than its fair share of out athletes, with so many seen competing at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. What other sports will emerge with a healthy dose of gay, lesbian, bi and queer athletes?
And will we see the first publicly out trans athlete to compete in an Olympic Games? There are at least a couple with a shot at making it to Tokyo.
