Singer Boy George has been slammed on social media for his views on evolving pronoun usage after he tweeted “Leave your pronouns at the door” earlier this week.
The gay front man for Culture Club rose to fame as a trailblazer known for his androgynous looks in the ’80s and hits including “Karma Chameleon” and “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me.”
Despite his being a pioneer back then, Boy George’s recent comments fed into stereotypes that have been thrown at queer people for ages.
When one Twitter user responded to Boy George’s tweet by asking, “Do you not know what the fuck pronouns are?” the singer came back with “a modern form of attention seeking?”
One fan who expressed dismay with Boy George’s failure to get on board with modern pronoun usage wrote, “As much as I love you, that does sound quite ridiculous.”
“You must refer to me as ‘Napoleon’ and that’s as ridiculous as it gets!” the Culture Club singer wrote. “I used the ladies toilet throughout the 80s!”
Twitter users continued to engage Boy George and call him out for transphobia, but he kept digging in with increasingly tone-deaf remarks. Some of Boy George’s responses have been deleted from Twitter, but screen shots of the original responses are floating around on social media. One social media user reminded others that Boy George was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2009 for falsely imprisoning a male escort when he handcuffed him to a wall and beat him with a chain.
One person asked, “What does it take to show others respect by using their preferred pronouns?” Boy George responded, “I have eyes and can mostly describe what I see.”
